Superior Jetties recently installed a new curved pontoon at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) in Pittwater, Sydney.

Close to 50m in length, the pontoon is a custom design of Superior Jetties’ Super Elite system and has been installed as a service wharf – allowing club members and the public to access the restaurant, chandlery and clubhouse from the water.

RPAYC facilities manager Dave Randall said the pontoon was a welcome addition to the club’s docking facilities. “The previous service pontoon was pretty well past its use-by date,” Mr Randall said.

“Superior Jetties did a fantastic job customising the pontoon to fit both the space available and the club’s specific needs.

“It’s given the club more flexibility as we can get boats around the back of it now… for example, we had around 25 Etchells moored there during the recent state regatta.”

Superior Jetties project manager Matthew Browning said it was a good challenge to build a custom pontoon with such a distinctive curve.

“The final concept meant creating 12 individually-designed sections to be connected together,” Mr Browning said.

“The benefit of our Super Elite system is that it can be expanded in sections… all we had to do was design the exact angle of each section to make-up the overall pontoon curve.

“The modular aspect was important as the club wants to extend the pontoon all the way across to connect with the A-arm in the future… so we’ll be able to add sections as required and it should end up as a very cool S-shape.”

The five-sided concrete floatation with polyethylene base, along with the 125mm-thick concrete deck, gives the whole structure a very solid mass which makes it reassuringly stable which is important with a higher level of use.

Mr Browning said it was important to have high-level products on display for local marina managers to inspect at a time when the Sydney market was becoming more active.
