McConaghy Boats keep smashing records

McConaghy Boats have a well deserved reputation for quality durability and performance, having specialized in cutting edge racing yacht construction for over 45 years.

In 2002 the Reichel Pugh designed 90’ water ballasted Alfa Romeo was launched in Sydney for Neville Crichton. The yacht was an immediate success winning the 2002 Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race, then going on to win all of the great Rolex yacht races throughout Europe during 2003, 2004 & 2005. Alfa Romeo was later purchased by George David and renamed Rambler. George campaigned Rambler with great success throughout the world and has taken home more than his fair share of Rolex time pieces in the process.

In the recently completed 48th Newport Bermuda Race Rambler finished the 635 mile ocean race in a record time of 39hrs, 39mins, 18sec. shaving a massive 14hours off the previous record. Rambler even beat the canting ballast record by 9 hours held by Hasso Plattner’s Morning Glory, also designed by Reichel Pugh and built by McConaghy.

‘These were perfect conditions,’ said a delighted David in Bermuda. ‘The most exciting moment was when we hit 26 knots. I’m so pleased with our performance. We have reduced the record by twenty-five percent—not bad for a boat that’s now 10 years old. This Rambler is the best boat I have ever owned!

Another McConaghy built Reichel Pugh design Shockwave won class 10, and posted the best corrected time in the entire fleet. Adding an offshore IRC victory to an earlier win in the 158th NYYC Annual Regatta, a lead up regatta to the Newport Bermuda race.

Meanwhile at the smaller end of the fleet the recently launched McConaghy built HPR 40 Decision owned by Stephen Murray has been creating a stir with an IRC class win in Class 8.
