How to get boat licence QLD?
In order to get a boat licence in Queensland, you must be at least 16 years old, and complete and pass a BoatSafe course or have a recognised and valid interstate marine licence.
Getting your boat licence is a three-step process, similar to getting your car driver’s licence.
- Study the Boatsafe Workbook – Printed copies are available from Queensland Transport customer service centres and MSQ regional offices. Some BoatSafe training providers may provide the BoatSafe Workbook as part of their course. You will need to check with your training provider.
- After you have studied the book you are ready to take the licence course.
- After the licence course – Once you have completed the course, you must present the statement of competency (copies are not accepted), a licence application form and proof of identification (driver’s licence, passport or similar) in person at a Queensland Transport customer service centre. Cost is $36.90 for a lifetime recreational marine drivers licence.
How much is a boat licence QLD?
Whether you require a Recreational Marine Driver Licence, or a Personal Watercraft Licence, the price is the same and will cost you $123.85. This does not include the cost of the BoatSafe Course, but simply for applying for and obtaining your QLD boat licence.
Do you need a boat licence in QLD?
Yes, to operate a boat that has engine power greater than 4.5kW, you will require a boat licence in QLD. For vessels with power outputs less than this, you will not require a boat licence.
Can I drive a boat without a licence in QLD?
If the boat you are driving has an engine output of less than 4.5kW of power, you do not need a licence to operate your vessel. However, it’s always a safe idea to complete a BoatSafe course so you feel competent navigating your boat on the water.
Can I use my QLD boat licence in NSW?
You can use your QLD boat licence in NSW if you are visiting, or in the state for less than three months. If you plan to operate your vessel for longer than three months in QLD, you will be required to update your licence to a NSW one.

Yes, you can transfer your NSW boat licence to a QLD boat licence if you do so within the first three months of you moving to the state. If you apply after this date, you will be required to pass a new BoatSafe test.
