Boating Safety is the focus of NSW Maritime at the Sydney Boat Show

Boating safety is once again the focus of this year’s NSW Maritime precinct at the Sydney International Boat Show, from 29 July to 2 August 2010.

The Maritime Safety Precinct, the biggest yet covering an area of 400 square metres, will be one of the first things the show’s 80,000 visitors see as they enter the exhibition halls and will feature 12 boating safety partners.

The united effort, involving government and non-government organisations, points to the healthy cooperation and partnerships that exist to help ensure our waterways are as safe as possible.

The overarching message for the safety precinct is the need for responsible behaviour. The theme is You’re the Skipper – You’re Responsible. Skippers are responsible for the safety of everyone on board and must be aware of the rules before heading out.

This year’s safety messages include knowing when to wear a lifejacket, keeping a proper lookout and the potential dangers of propeller strike.

NSW Maritime’s safety partners in the Safe Boating Precinct in Hall 5, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, are:

The Boating Industry Association of NSW, which organises the Sydney International Boat Show each year.
Also located within the precinct is the new Boating Discovery Centre hosted by Trans-Tasman kayaking adventurers and Boat For Life safety ambassadors, Justin Jones and James Castrission. The centre will feature information on safety and participation in recreational boating with lots of activities for younger boating enthusiasts, including the NSW Maritime Safety Explorer competition.

By picking up a NSW Maritime Safety Explorer Passport from Justin and James at the Boating Discovery Centre, and collecting a full set of Safety Explorer stamps from stands within the Marine Precinct, children have a chance to win fantastic boating prizes, including a junior sailing boat and a kayak.

The 43rd Sydney International Boat Show will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and Cockle Bay Marina, Darling Harbour from 29 July to 2 August 2010.
