Hamilton Island Race Week continues to be a standout event in the yachting calendar and the 2024 edition was no exception. The Nautilus Marine Insurance Classic races delivered another exciting chapter in this storied regatta.
As a key partner, Nautilus Marine Insurance has once again played a significant role in the event, celebrating the 39th year of this prestigious regatta. The week kicked off in style with the Yacht Owners and Skippers Cocktail Party, setting the stage for six days of thrilling competition on the waters of the Whitsundays.
With 164 vessels participating, the racing was intense and engaging. On Tuesday, the Nautilus Marine Insurance Classic Long Race and Medium Race tested the crews’ skills and strategies. The IRC Rating Division Gold in the Classic Long Race was claimed by the Reichel Pugh 66 Alive, hailing from the Derwent Sailing Club in Tasmania. Tactician Justin Ferris praised the race’s competitive nature and highlighted the hard work of their new crew members.
“Hamilton Island Race Week is easily one of the best” Justin Ferris
The Reichel Pugh 52 Virago also made a notable impression. Having traveled from Sydney by road, the crew was ready to tackle the challenges of Hamilton Island’s tactical waters. Tactician Andrew Parkes, a veteran of over 20 Race Weeks, appreciated the unique conditions and scenic beauty, despite the lighter winds this year.
Ian Box’s Toybox 2 secured a divisional third place, marking a successful week for the team, which included 20 members. Box, reflecting on his long history with the event, noted how much enjoyment was had by all involved.
Mark Richards, skipper of Wild Oats X, echoed the sentiment of Hamilton Island Race Week’s special status. The boat finished second in the Nautilus Marine Classic Long Race, and Richards thanked Nautilus Marine Insurance for their unwavering support.
Nautilus Marine Insurance CEO Lyndon Turner was also present, lauding the 2024 event’s success and the hard work of everyone involved.
“This is our third year partnering with Race Week” Lyndon Turner
Turner said, acknowledging the efforts of the organizing committee and Hamilton Island team.
