Caves Beach clinches IRB title No. 10 with SeaPro power!

Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club has continued its amazing domination of Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) competition with an unbelievable 10th victory at the NSW Championships.

And as usual, the Caves Beach team was helped to the win by its 25hp Mercury SeaPro outboards.

Held at Fingal Beach, Port Stephens, the Caves Beach team finished the contest with 92.5 points, 18 ahead of second placed rivals Kiama Downs. 

 “It was a 16 event program and we collected medals in 14 of them – four Gold, four Silver and six Bronze – so it was an all round team effort,” said long-time Team Captain Scott Bryant.

“It’s a protected beach but on the day the wind and swell combined to make for some very rough and testing conditions. Conditions like this not only test the crews but put a huge strain on the strength and reliability of our equipment.”

This latest victory means Caves Beach has won 10 of the past 11 NSW IRB titles, making it the most successful club in the competition’s history.

“It’s been a great string of success apart from 2011 when we came second to South Maroubra, but that only spurred us on to get back to the top making the 2012 victory even sweeter,” Scott said. 

The Caves Beach team has been using Mercury SeaPro outboards exclusively since 2002.

“The SeaPro is a good, strong engine, starts first go every single time and is exceptionally responsive,” Scott said.

“Races can be decided by fractions of a second, so we need an engine that responds immediately every time and never lets us down, even through the roughest surf conditions.

“What’s more, these are the engines we use for beach patrols and rescues as well, and that is when reliability and toughness can be lifesaving – literally.”

“We have seven SeaPro engines and one is a 2003 model – ten years old and still going well.

“We also run a 2004 model in competitions which says something,” Scott said.
