Crown Lands Promotes Safe Development of Waterfront Structures at Sydney International Boat Show

Crown Lands, a branch of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI), is set to showcase it’s commitment to the proper management of waterfront structures at the Sydney International Boat Show. The annual event, running from August 1 to 4 at the International Convention Centre and Cockle Bay Wharf, is expected to draw thousands of maritime enthusiasts.

As the agency responsible for managing Crown land, including areas below the mean high-water mark, Crown Lands will use its presence at the boat show to raise awareness about the requirements for lawful development and occupation of Crown waterways. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the necessary steps to properly apply for and develop waterfront structures such as jetties and pontoons.

Crown Lands representatives will provide crucial information on obtaining consent before any development begins, details about waterfront licenses and what is permitted on foreshore Crown land or waterways. It is essential for anyone looking to build a domestic waterfront structure on Crown land or a waterway to first secure Crown Lands’ consent, obtain development approval from their local council, and then apply for a licence to use the land.

Building structures without proper authorisations can lead to various issues including safety hazards, restricted community access, environmental harm, and legal penalties. It is also an offence to construct or undertake development on Crown land without the appropriate authority.

Additionally, items such as recreational craft, outdoor seating, and equipment should not be stored on foreshore Crown land to avoid potential conflicts and ensure the land remains accessible and well-maintained.

The Sydney International Boat Show is a premier event that not only attracts boating and maritime enthusiasts but also highlights the latest marine products and technologies. For Crown Lands, it serves as a key opportunity for networking, collaboration, education, and raising awareness about the importance of compliance and safety on our waterways and public foreshore land.

Greg Sullivan, Executive Director of Land and Asset Management at Crown Lands, emphasized, “We want communities to safely enjoy our waterways, so it is crucial that any development of domestic waterfront structures is properly approved. Managing built structures through appropriate approvals and licensing ensures our waterways remain safe, accessible, and not overcrowded, preserving public access to foreshore areas.”
