Hunter: results from Operation Blue Water
A total of 77 vessels were inspected by NSW Maritime Boating Safety Officers offshore from the Hunter region at the weekend as part of Operation Blue Water – a statewide offshore boating safety campaign.
Of the 77 vessels checked, three skippers received fines and three were issued with formal warnings.
Most boaters were well behaved and were found to have the correct safety equipment on board for their vessel type and size.
However, three skippers were found not to have the correct number of flares on board. Flares are a crucial signalling device if you are lost at sea and are required by law to be carried by those heading offshore.
Operation Blue Water was carried out in coastal waters from Tweed to Eden, focusing on skippers’ responsibilities.
