Boating in north of Perth is fun and easy in Mindarie, WA.

Most boating in Western Australia is focused on fishing.  Cruising mainly means Cockburn Sound and its islands, or Mandurah for the more adventurous.  There is a great shortage of places where you can park your boat near a beach for the kids and have a meal and a drink.

Mindarie is an exception. About 23nm north of Fremantle, it has a stunning marina with a long boardwalk that welcomes visiting boats.  You don’t need to book: just turn up and pay a few dollars at the desk of the hotel.  To do that, you have to walk past the Indian Ocean Brewhaus, and few people can resist dropping in for one of the locally brewed ales.

There is another more family-oriented pub nearby, two coffee shops and an Indian restaurant: no shortage of eats and drinks.  If you bring the kids’ bikes along, you can send them off to the ocean beach, but even if you don’t, it’s no great walk.

The Fremantle to Mindarie trip is as scenic as it gets in this area.  You can look at the mainland as you travel, and there’s a chance of seeing sea lions.  Little Island and Burns Rocks are possible spots to check out.  The journey passes through Marmion Marine Park, where there are any number of places where it’s worth dropping anchor and getting the snorkels on.

Continue a little north of Mindarie and you come to Eglinton Rocks, where you can still see the state’s most famous 20th Century shipwreck, the Alkimos.  The wreck is also the reputed home to one of Western Australia’s best-known ghosts.
