Sailfish Catamarans launches their largest catamaran ever

The Sailfish range of aluminium catamarans is a popular and well known brand both in Australia and overseas.  However the latest launching has seen the company achieve a raft of notable ‘firsts’ that sets the brand ahead of the pack.

Sailfish Catamarans has launched and delivered their biggest ever catamaran: the Sailfish 5000 with a length overall of 15.24m or 50’. 

The Sailfish 5000 is also the first alloy catamaran in the world to be fitted with revolutionary Volvo IPS drives.

 “From every perspective this is an amazing new boat,” said Gavan Daly of Webbe Marine, authorised agents for Sailfish Catamarans.

 “The customer clearly wanted a distinctive and unique powerboat.  The Sailfish 500 is a custom built boat in every respect.  The customer had done his research and specifically requested the Volvo ISP drives.”

On board the Sailfish 5000, the configuration and hull layout is spectacular.  Double beds are a feature of the staterooms, there is a fully equipped galley with every conceivable appointment, rear covered deck, ‘L’ shaped flybridge station, on board davit for a tender or PWC plus a full Furuno electronics package.

The Volvo drives fitted are the IPS600 model, duo prop drives that deliver 418hp at the props.  Displacing 5.5 litres, the IPS drives bring car like handling and manoeuvring to boating.  By working the dash mounted joystick control, docking is easy and precise.

With forward facing, twin counter-rotating propellers that work in clean, undisturbed water, Volvo’s IPS pods are unique and ground breaking technology.

“The Volvo IPS drives work beautifully on the big Sailfish 5000,” Gavan Daly said. 

“By any measure this is a big boat and the new IPS technology is quite at home with the cat configuration.  The efficiency of the IPS drives is quite impressive with IPS 600 drives delivering the same performance as a 600 hp shaft drive configuration, but without the fuel costs that come with a big engine.”
