The new Cummins MerCruiser Diesel powered McLay boat is making big waves in NZ

Built around a brilliant Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (CMD) 220hp 2.8 litre engine and a Bravo 3 drive, the new McLay 735s hardtop is causing quite a stir in New Zealand.

How good is it ? Well, it was named Boat of the Show at the recent Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show – the first time an aluminium boat has taken out the big prize since judging changed 11 years ago.

McLay Boats, based in the small Otago town of Milton, has a big reputation for building serious, high quality recreational craft. So when they got together with Mercury Marine to create a boat that highlights the many benefits of stern drive propulsion, you’d expect the result to be special.

“What’s really started people talking about this boat is its ability to do everything,” said Dean Harris, Mercury Marine’s Manager – New Zealand.

“It’s a brilliant fishing boat which can also be used as a family cruiser. Fishers will love the way all the features have been incorporated – the storage areas, rod holders, bait table, live bait tank etc.

“While family members will really appreciate the room and comfort McLay has achieved with an extended cockpit, shower, fridge and spacious sleeping area – it’s a smooth, warm and dry ride.”

The 2.8-litre CMD common rail diesel engine provides many of the boat’s best features.

Delivering power through a Bravo 3 drive the boat’s lower centre of gravity means it sits beautifully in the water.

With 220 hp, the McLay 735s lifts onto the plane easily. It cruises comfortably at 25 knots and can reach 34-36 knots flat out.

Just as importantly, the 220HO power pack has torque and acceleration to spare, making driving the boat easy and enjoyable. Of course, fuel economy is great.

“We’re now embarking on a national tour with the boat, taking her to shows and marinas around the country so everyone can see how good she is,” Dean said.

“Believe me, once you get aboard and have a look and a feel you just know this is a brilliant, fully-equipped, user-friendly boating package.”
